The article examines the current problem of developing students’ competencies in the process of project activities and readiness for this type of activity. The authors, referring to the results of their activities, give a brief description of the essence of the formation of students’ competencies in the process of project activity and its role in the general educational process of higher education institutions. Modern educational systems are in constant development, which requires teachers to be able to adapt to new teaching methods, technologies, and requirements. In this regard, the formation of future teachers’ competencies is not only the training of qualified specialists, but also the creation of a sustainable educational environment conducive to the development of students and society as a whole. By analyzing the modern works on the problem of formation and development of students’ competencies in the process of project activity, the authors identified and formulated the following pedagogical conditions: the use of an individual approach to teaching; teachers’ systematic improvement of their professional qualifications in organization of project activities; students’ readiness for project activities. The authors pay special attention to the diagnosis of students’ readiness for project activities and believe that the readiness of future teachers to implement project-based learning technology is an active and dynamic state of the future professional’s personality, including creative abilities, research and digital competencies. The article concludes that the application of the project method in the educational process for the training of future teachers will make it possible to implement modern approaches to the organization of higher education, which focus the educational process on achieving results in the form of professional competencies within the framework of the competence paradigm of education.
