Abstracts:
Given the steadily growing interest in board games in Russia and the state’s demand for the development of a nationwide civic identity, there arises a scientific and methodological understanding of the educational potential of this leisure segment.
The objective of the article is to analyze the range of board games on the Russian retail market, identify their potential and shortcomings in the context of civic-patriotic education, and formulate requirements for such games.
The empirical base consisted of board games selected using a purposive criterion sampling method. Content analysis of descriptions and classification of games by educational focus were used, in accordance with the federal (model) educational curricula.
The largest number of games were found to be related to patriotic education (history of wars, geography, national symbols). An imbalance was identified: “contemplative patriotism” (knowledge of dates and facts) predominates, with an almost complete absence of games that model active citizenship, government structure, rights, and responsibilities.
The Russian market for board games for civic and patriotic education is in its infancy. The existing range of games addresses historical and cultural education objectives but fails to foster the active component of patriotism and citizenship. The requirements for next-generation games (cooperative mechanics, role-playing modeling of social functions, problem-based approach) and the need for pedagogical support to convey value content are substantiated.
