Abstracts:
This article examines the communicative-pragmatic features of implicatures within the emotive code of a literary text. The research material is A.P. Chekhov’s short story “The Student”, which contains a representative number of micro- and macro-contexts for examining the linguistic mechanisms of producing implicit meanings in the literary textual-discursive space. The leading methods applied to the research material in a comprehensive manner include communicative-pragmatic analysis, componential and distributional analysis, and philological interpretation. The study demonstrated that the literary textual-discursive space, in which the reader is included in their receptive-interpretive activity, is always characterized by emotiveness. In Chekhov’s short story, emotiveness is implicit to create the illusion of a truly experienced emotion along with the characters, as a detailed description of the emotion is incapable of creating the necessary communicative-pragmatic effect. The emotive code of the story “The Student” is realized through the representation of the characters’ empathy for the Gospel events recounted by the protagonist and, consequently, in the protagonist’s emotional response to the reactions of his listeners. Implicatures of the protagonist’s own feelings are decoded through verbal markers of his mental activity, memories, and physical state. It has been established that the emotional reactions elicited during communication with another consciousness actualize the main idea in the text of Chekhov’s story, pragmatically oriented toward an emotional impact on the reader: awakening to a new life and finding the right path are possible only through the recognition of eternal meanings, which are manifested in the implicatures of the emotive code, which transform from negative to positive.
