The article examines phraseological units and paroemias with a food-related orientalism component in the languages of some Slavs of the Balkan Peninsula, who were under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for several centuries. The language of the Ottoman Turks became an intermediary language through which the words of Persian and Arabic origin entered the South Slavic languages. The purpose of this work is to identify the phraseological potential of the four Persianisms and one Arabism, which are the names of dressings, appetizers, sourdough, vegetable oil, and scrambled eggs, and have become components of stable verbal complexes in some Balkan Slavic languages that have not yet been the subject of special description. The orientalisms discussed, which are food names, have remained in the literary languages and dialects of the people of Bulgaria, Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia, and have been preserved in various fixed expressions. In some cases, orientalism and slavism within the same language form lexical variants of idioms and proverbs, and the actual imagery has led to the existence of equivalents in other languages. The analysis showed both the commonality and the ethnographic specificity of the motivational ideas that became the basis for the phraseological units. The material was taken from phraseological and paremiological dictionaries and other linguistic sources. The analysis used descriptive, component, and comparative methods.
