PRECEDENT PHENOMENA IN THE SPACE OF INTERSUBJECTIVITY OF LITERARY DISCOURSE
The article examines the role of intersubjectivity in the organization of intertextuality and – more broadly – precedence in literary discourse. Literary discourse studied from the standpoint of intersubjectivity appears as the correlation of the author’s intent and the receptive-interpretive activity of the reader. The relevance of the study is determined by the importance of substantiating the cognitive and pragmatic status of intersubjectivity in the functioning of precedent phenomena in literary discourse, which is interpreted as a dialogical interaction between the author and the reader, which contributes to the emergence of interpretive polyvariability while emphasizing the central meanings of aesthetic communication for the author. The material for the study is the text of J. Harris’s novel “Gentlemen and Players” in the original and T. V. Starostina’s translation; the research methods constitute a holistic complex in which the comparative-contrastive method, the method of analysis and synthesis, communicative-pragmatic and discursive analysis, and philological interpretation are prioritized. The study established that the realization of intersubjectivity in literary discourse is possible only if the reader has sufficient background knowledge to recognize and decode precedent phenomena. Precedent phenomena are characterized by a synthesis of cognitive and pragmatic components, clarifying aesthetic meanings in the text of J. Harris’s novel “Gentlemen and Players”, contributing to the formation of character images and influencing the reader’s decoding of the characters’ personalities and the events within the semantic space of literary discourse.
