Abstracts:

This article analyzes the potential and limitations of Michael Lewis’s Lexical Approach in teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL). The topic is relevant due to the need for teaching methods that enhance students’ verbal and cognitive abilities, develop skills in fluent, natural-sounding Russian, and assist in solving communicative tasks in real-life situations. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical justification for implementing the Lexical Approach in RFL and to develop specific methodological techniques. The authors examine “lexical chunks” as units of training and analyze the linguistic difficulties of implementing the approach, stemming from the nature of the Russian language: morphological variability, flexible stress, and free word order. This paper proposes specific methodological solutions for organizing the “Observation – Hypothesis – Experiment” learning cycle, describing types of assignments and methods for maintaining “lexical notebooks” using matrices, cascades, and storylines. It is noted that implementing the lexical approach at various stages of learning requires significant heuristic activity from foreign students. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of the role of the RFL teacher who, facing a shortage of specialized materials, acts as a researcher of corpus data and a creator of teaching and assessment materials designed to accommodate the high degree of grammaticalization of “lexical chunks” in Russian.
