Abstracts:

The article reveals the peculiarities of translating film titles from English into Russian, discusses the issues on the realization of their pragmatic potential and presents a comparative analysis of translation of filmonyms. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the number of films is increasing and it is needed to localize them. The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of the film title translations considering the realization of their pragmatic potential. The study materials consist of English-language films and series produced by 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and others. The theoretical and methodological framework includes the works of L. E. Cherkassky, V. N. Komissarov, Ya. I. Retsker, and others. The result of the study shows that localization of filmonyms makes use of various lexical, grammatical and syntactical adaptation. Translation adequacy plays a crucial role: it requires preserving the original’s content at the lexical and grammatical levels and also in terms of its pragmatic function. The comparative analysis demonstrates that Russian localizers do not always successfully adapt film titles due to translation difficulties or marketing outcome.
