KINSHIP TERMS АСАТТЕ / АСАННЕ IN MODELING THE WORLDVIEW OF CHUVASH RIDDLES: CELESTIAL BODIES AND NATURAL PHENOMENA
Keywords:
Chuvash riddle, kinship term, cultural code, mentality, linguistic worldview
Abstracts:
Words denoting kinship occupy a special place in the culture of the people and have a high axiological potential, are used as a way of codifying objects and phenomena, relationships in small folklore genres (proverbs, phraseological units and riddles). In the Chuvash linguistic worldview, the terms of maternal and paternal kinship differ, and there are special words for elder and younger family members (brothers, sisters). This “fractionality” gets a peculiar interpretation when exploring the surrounding world in riddles. The relevance of the research undertaken is due to its fit into the paradigm of studying cultural codes, in which language signs are considered as cultural signs. The material for the study was riddle texts with асатте / асанне components, extracted by continuous sampling from the collection of Chuvash riddles “Тупмаллиюмахсем” (2015–2016). The research is devoted to the identification of cultural (archetypal) meanings in Chuvash riddles about the sky, celestial bodies and meteorological phenomena. The main methods are descriptive, complex linguistic and cultural analysis, partly statistical. The authors conclude that if the sky is associated only with the masculine principle – with the grandfather, then the image of the luminaries (sun and moon) is represented by both male and female variants. In addition, there is a clear gender division of objects: household tools related to agriculture and animal husbandry are the sphere of асатте, kitchen and other household utensils are the sphere of асанне.
