Abstracts:

This article presents a classification of lexical units verbalizing the image of the North in the English language. The relevance of the study is determined by the interdisciplinary focus on the Arctic region and the need for a systematic description of this fragment of the linguistic worldview. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the analysis of the structure of the lexico-semantic group “North” creates a foundation for the subsequent study of the image of the North. The research material includes data from six English explanatory dictionaries: the Cambridge Dictionary, the Collins Dictionary, Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, the Etymological Dictionary of the English Language, the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. Using the methods of continuous sampling and componential analysis, a corpus of lexical units was formed and systematized. As a result of the study, the core of the lexico-semantic group was identified, and its detailed semantic classification into ten groups was carried out. The analysis made it possible to identify not only the basic meanings of spatial orientation and climate but also metaphorical, socio-cultural, and political aspects of semantics. Thus, the study demonstrates the evolution of a geographical term into a complex socio-cultural image.
