The article analyzes Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Slovenian and Montenegrin phraseological units with potamonym components from the linguistic and cultural points of view. The names of rivers from purely geographical concepts were conceptualized in these South Slavic languages and became firmly entrenched in the mentality of their speakers. This, undoubtedly, was reflected in the expressive phraseological units, the consideration of which is the subject of this study. The aim of the article is to examine phraseological units with Balkan potamonyms in the languages of the peoples of the countries of the former SFRY in order to identify the universal and nationally specific. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that South Slavic phraseological units with potamonym components have not yet been analyzed in a comparative manner. The methods of processing the material are componential, comparative, continuous sampling from different sources, as well as recordings of modern colloquial speech, including slang and jargon. The article presents background sketches about the hydronymics of the Slavic Balkans for a clearer understanding of this or that image, which formed the basis of metaphorization and idiomatization. The phraseological units discussed in the article, which are frequent and recognizable in the usage of modern speakers, can also contribute to a deeper understanding of the mentality of the mentality of the Balkan Slavic peoples, and can also be used in the practice of translation studies.
