Abstracts:

The article explores Turgenev’s tradition in the depiction of nature and man in the prose by Yu. P. Kazakov (“Quiet Morning”, “Songs of the Forest”, “Night”, “Old Hunting Grounds”, “Nikishka’s Secrets” and “Fiddle-Faddle”). It is stressed that it is the philosophical reflection on nature that brings the writers together. I.S. Turgenev and his literary successor depict it in two images. The first is eternal, omnipotent, and indifferent to people. The second is beautiful, spiritualized, and exists in a harmonious connection with people.

In Yu.P. Kazkov’s short stories, characters with the so-called “inner integrity” have been identified according to the types distinguished by M. O. Gershenson in the works of I. S. Turgenev. The first type includes the characters with a “split soul”, while the second one comprises those with “inner integrity” who live in a harmony with nature. It is noted that the characters of the second type are hunters, fishermen, and foresters, who are often depicted using animal imagery. They consider nature to be their “home”, know its secret language well, perceive it as something alive, and do not strive to uncover its mysteries.

In contemporary Russian literary science, the conceptual analysis of characters with “inner integrity” in Yu. P. Kazakov’s work has not yet been the subject of specialized study. The research employed a comparative and contrasting method, as well as a holistic analysis of the literary work.
