Abstracts:

The article is devoted to the study of the ancient cultural practice of memorizing, identification of the importance of memory development in education for sustainable development. The skill of memorizing has always played an important role in teaching and working with canonical texts, especially during periods of oral knowledge transmission. The negative attitude towards memorizing today, on the one hand, and the research on the decline of mnemonic abilities among youth, the risk of “digital dementia”, on the other hand, make it relevant to study the potential of this method for preserving the cultural code of any nation. The effectiveness of traditional methods in education is confirmed by the success of reformation leaders in spreading new doctrine and improving literacy among the population. Methods and strategies of memorizing in M. Luther’s educational activities are revealed on the basis of his works, statements collected by F. Gedike in the work “Luthers Pädagogik”. Using descriptive, analytical and comparative methods, it is proved that the reformer's thoughts correlate with folk wisdom, correspond to the principles of consistency, uniformity, cyclicity, accessibility, clarity, and conformity to nature in pedagogy. The paper emphasizes the importance of interaction with adults in their studies, the involvement of the latter, the appeal to selected good texts, which included the Catechism, the song fund for strengthening memory, intelligence, shaping a worldview and an active civic position, the development of the university and general culture. Modern methodologists advocate conscious cognitive loads (including learning foreign languages) and interval repetition. Their research on the benefits of memorizing for speech development, broadening horizons, developing emotional intelligence, imagination, and releasing creativity proves the inexpediency of abandoning this cultural technique and justifies the use of traditional methods to optimize the learning process in the digital age.
